The Smokescreen code is 1-6-6-4-6-6, and you never type it. Go to the Sandflies camp the contract marks near the Wreck of the Alecto, find their communications console and use "Transmit false location". The console sends the Harkonnen locator code on its own. Smokescreen is the last contract of the Atreides Payload chain, and it pays out the Experimental Vulcan GAU-94.

How to start the Payload chain

Take Find the Alecto from the contract board at Helius Gate, the Atreides fortress in Hagga Basin. The issuer is Captain Donnell Firth. Black-market aircraft parts have turned up from the Alecto, a ship everyone thought had burned up in battle, and the Atreides want to know what happened to the sensitive cargo she carried. The contract card says from the start that the chain ends with a unique weapon.

The wreck is a long ride from Helius Gate, up on the Shield Wall in the north-west of the basin. An ornithopter makes the trip far easier (how to get an ornithopter), but a sandbike gets there too. Firth's first line is "pack a scanner", and he means it: the third contract can't be done without one.

Payload walkthrough: all four contracts

Fastest way through Payload

  • Make it one trip. All four contracts happen around the Alecto. Calls to the issuer go through the contract menu, so you never need to fly back to Helius Gate between steps.
  • Equip the scanner before you land. Eyes on the Prize starts with a scan at the wreck. Having it on a hotbar slot saves a trip through your inventory mid-fight.
  • Clear only what blocks you. The Sandflies camps are full of shooters. Kill the guards between you and the asset or console, grab the objective and leave. Come back for loot later if you want it.
  • Bring a vehicle with storage. The Alecto is the best aluminum and basalt spot in the basin. Mine on the way out and the trip pays for itself; see where to find aluminum ore.
  • Watch for worms on the open sand. Park on rock near the wreck, not on the dunes around it.

Common problems and fixes

  • "Use your Scanner to pick up the trail" won't progress. Equip the scanner and scan at the wreck itself, not at the camp. If nothing shows, walk around the cargo area slowly while scanning.
  • I'm at the console but there's nothing to type. That's correct. Smokescreen has no keypad; you just interact with the console and it sends 1-6-6-4-6-6 itself.
  • The contract finished but I got no reward. Every Payload contract ends with a call to the issuer. Open the contract menu and call Firth.
  • The cargo bay search is stuck. One search point is left. Look around the whole bay, including the corners behind debris.
  • I came for loot too. The Alecto also holds a Blue ID band. Grab it while you're there; ID bands and keycards lists what each wreck needs.

Rewards

Each Payload contract gives 350 XP and Solari, and the payout grows toward the end of the chain. Smokescreen adds the two unique items:

  • Experimental Vulcan GAU-94, a unique light machine gun with a very high rate of fire;
  • Sandfly Light Armor Set Variant, a look for the Sandfly light armor.

The Harkonnen side: Counter Agent

The same story has a Harkonnen version. Sub-Bashar Istivan Madis posts the Counter Agent chain on the board at Riftwatch, the Harkonnen fortress:

  1. Wreck & Ruin: find the wreck of the Alecto (bring a scanner).
  2. Finding Reason: search the cargo bay.
  3. Atomic Variable: a locator signal comes from a nearby structure; investigate it. This is the false signal from Smokescreen, so it turns out to be a ruse.
  4. The Price of Failure: the spy who leaked the code is now a double agent. Meet him and make sure he doesn't walk away.

Every Counter Agent contract also gives 350 XP, and the last one rewards the Sandfly Light Armor Set Variant. The GAU-94 comes only from the Atreides chain.

What comes next

Payload ends with Smokescreen, so nothing new opens after it. Other Atreides and Harkonnen work is in the faction questline guide. If you liked the area, the Alecto is also one of the best late-game base locations for aluminum and basalt.

What is the Smokescreen code in Dune Awakening?

1-6-6-4-6-6. You don't type it: interact with the Sandflies communications console ("Transmit false location") and it sends the code by itself.

Where is the Smokescreen console?

In another Sandflies camp near the Wreck of the Alecto on the Shield Wall, north-west Hagga Basin. Accept the contract and follow its marker to the right camp.

Who gives the Payload contracts?

Captain Donnell Firth, on the contract board at Helius Gate, the Atreides fortress.

How do I get the Experimental Vulcan GAU-94?

Finish all four Payload contracts: Find the Alecto, Sensitive Cargo, Eyes on the Prize and Smokescreen. The final call to Firth gives the GAU-94 and the Sandfly Light Armor Set Variant.

Do I need a scanner for Payload?

Yes. Eyes on the Prize asks you to scan for the trail at the wreck, and it can't be done without a handheld scanner.
