To farm spice, collect Spice Sand from spice fields with a Static Compactor, then refine it into Spice Melange at a spice refinery. Hagga Basin has only small fields (87 spots). Medium and large fields appear only in the Deep Desert, where yields are bigger and so are the risks: sandworms and PvP.

Small spice fields in Hagga Basin

Hagga's 87 small fields are spread over open sand, away from named places. The tightest group is around the Wreck of the Delphis (Aft) in the south-west, with five fields close by:

Small fields are fine for your first Melange and for spiced food. For real volume you'll have to go to the Deep Desert.

Medium and large fields in the Deep Desert

The Deep Desert has hundreds of small fields and dozens of medium ones each week, plus the large fields. Everything is reshuffled every week, so never trust last week's coordinates. Our map opens this week's Deep Desert and shows every spot where a large field can appear:

For getting there and surviving, read the Deep Desert guide.

Live spice-field marks on our map

The game has no public timer for spice fields, so we built one with the community. On the map, any logged-in player can mark a field as active: privately, for their guild, or for everyone. Active fields pulse on the map. Other players can confirm a mark, which shows who saw it and when.

A mark stays active for 30 minutes on a small field, 1 hour on a medium and 2 hours on a large one, counted from the first mark. Treat them as a rough guide, not an exact timer. Confirmations don't extend them, so stale fields drop off on their own.

What you need to farm spice

  • Static Compactor (10 Iron Ingots and 7 EMF Generators at any Fabricator). It collects Spice Sand by hand. The Industrial Static Compactor (18 Aluminum Ingots, 10 EMF Generators, 9 Cobalt Paste) and the tier-6 Omni Static Compactor are the upgrades.
  • A Sandcrawler for medium and large fields. It is built to harvest spice in bulk, but every crawler part is tier 6.
  • Water. Refining is thirsty, see below.
  • A way out. An ornithopter or a fast vehicle parked off the sand.

How to refine Spice Sand into Melange

Spice Sand is refined at three stations. All of them also return Spice Residue:

StationSpice SandMelangeResidueTimeWaterPower
Spice Refinery100153 min750 ml200
Medium Spice Refinery75010757.5 min7,000 ml350
Large Spice Refinery10,0002001,00045 min75,000 ml500

The bigger the refinery, the better the yield: 100 sand per Melange in the small one, 75 in the medium, 50 in the large. The large refinery also uses half as much water per Melange.

Building them is a progression in itself:

  • Spice Refinery: 60 Cobalt Paste, 120 Duraluminum Ingots, 100 Silicone Blocks, 50 Complex Machinery.
  • Medium Spice Refinery: 140 Cobalt Paste, 105 Spice Melange, 190 Silicone Blocks, 80 Complex Machinery, 225 Plastanium Ingots.
  • Large Spice Refinery: 825 Cobalt Paste, 840 Spice Melange, 900 Silicone Blocks, 280 Complex Machinery, 55 Advanced Machinery, 750 Plastanium Ingots.

Cobalt Paste comes from Erythrite and Duraluminum from Jasmium, so you'll need both before your first refinery.

What Spice is used for

Spice Melange goes into almost all tier-6 gear, weapons and vehicle parts (a Mk6 buggy engine needs 42, a unique Mk6 engine 145), Iodine Pills, and buildings such as the Spice-Powered Generator (210 Melange, 1,000 power), the Large Ore Refinery (315) and the Medium Insulated Cistern (60).

Spice Sand itself makes spiced consumables: Melange Spiced Food, Beer and Coffee, mixed with Plant Fiber.

Spice Residue is not waste. It goes into Industrial-grade Lubricant, Spice-infused Fuel Cells (48 residue per batch of 10) and the Advanced Particulate Filter (50 residue).

Melange also sells well. Check current prices on the market or read how to make Solari.

Dangers: sandworms, storms and PvP

  • PvP. Large parts of the Deep Desert allow PvP, and a working crawler is an easy target. Bring guards or farm off-peak.
  • Coriolis storm. The weekly storm resets the Deep Desert. Haul your Spice Sand back to Hagga Basin and refine it there: anything left in the Deep Desert at the reset is lost. Check the current storm and our Coriolis storm guide.
  • Water. A Large Spice Refinery run takes 75 litres. Build your water supply first.

Plan a full refinery chain in the crafting calculator before you commit resources.

Where is the best place to farm spice in Dune Awakening?

Medium and large fields in the Deep Desert. Hagga Basin has only 87 small fields; the densest group is around the Wreck of the Delphis (Aft).

How do you turn Spice Sand into Melange?

At a spice refinery: 100 sand per Melange in the Spice Refinery, 750 sand for 10 in the Medium one, 10,000 for 200 in the Large one.

What tool do you need to collect spice?

A Static Compactor (10 Iron Ingots, 7 EMF Generators). For medium and large fields, use a Sandcrawler, the bulk spice harvester.

Are there large spice fields in Hagga Basin?

No. Hagga has only small fields. Medium and large fields are in the Deep Desert.

How long does a spice field last?

The game shows no timer. Our map's community marks expire after 30 minutes for small, 1 hour for medium and 2 hours for large fields, as an estimate.
