Where does The Bloodline start?

The Bloodline is the seventh journey of The Great Convention — Part I. It opens after The Janusian Faithful (see The Great Convention murder investigation). Ariste asks to meet you at The Salusan Bull in Arrakeen. The map shows the bar and where Ariste stands:

Walkthrough

Where are young Ariste's etchings?

The Upper Archives hide four etchings, each with a number and a word. Here is where each one is:

EtchingWordWhere
FirstJarOn the table right at the bottom of the stairs
SecondMotherEnd of the corridor, by the red projection
ThirdDirtTable by the big blue projection, in the room with two guards
FourthWaterAfter the glowtube, on the right, in an alcove

Troopers who spot you only throw you out; they do not kill you. Do not attack them. You have no weapons anyway, so the projections are your only tool. Activate one, wait for the guard to walk over, and slip past.

Hidden notes and the floor code 4-7-2-3

In the Lower Archives, four hidden notes match the four words. Each note has dots drawn on it:

NoteMatchesDots
An angrily torn letterJar4
Message to Lady JessicaMother7
A draft from Lady Jessica's deskDirt2
Letter from Lady Margot to Lady JessicaWater3

Take the words in etching order (First to Fourth) and swap each for its dot count. That gives 4-7-2-3. Step on the floor plates with 4, 7, 2 and 3 holes, in that order. The Reverend Mother projection then appears.

The dots are drawn on the notes, not written as numbers, so count them carefully. Jot each count down as you find the note, and you won't have to run back through the archives if you forget one.

Bene Gesserit test answers

The projection starts a "myth-sequence verification". Pick Start, then answer:

Question 1: the lie crafted to make tyrants seem temporary and punishment seem enlightened. Options: Any bad human can be reformed / Virtue always triumphs / Evil men never prosper / A good deed is its own reward. Answer: Any bad human can be reformed.

Question 2: the myth that keeps hope alive through deferred justice. Options: Only females understand the ancient mysteries / Evil men never prosper / Honesty is the best policy / The rich are doomed to unhappiness. Answer: Evil men never prosper.

Question 3: the lie whispered in incense and shadow that turned obedience into awe. Options: Only females understand the ancient mysteries / The rich are doomed to unhappiness / Honesty is the best policy / A good deed is its own reward. Answer: Only females understand the ancient mysteries.

Question 4: the illusion embedded in the myth of sacrifice. Options: Everything happens for a reason / Pain makes us stronger / Suffering is noble / The strong owe the weak protection. Answer: Everything happens for a reason.

Note the trap: "Evil men never prosper" appears in question 1 as a wrong option, and is the right answer to question 2. "Only females understand the ancient mysteries" is wrong in question 2 and right in question 3.

A wrong answer ends the test. Talk to the projection again and you start over from question 1.

Fastest way through

  • Empty your pockets first. You lose access to weapons and gear for the archives run, so there is no point bringing anything valuable.
  • Grab each etching as you go. You need all four words before the notes make sense.
  • Read the notes once, write down the dots, and go straight to the plates.
  • Do not fight. Being caught just sends you back; patience with the projections is faster.

Common problems and fixes

  • Stuck in dialogue with Margot Fenring. A recent patch fixed this. If it still happens, relog.
  • The floor plates do nothing. Check that you found all four hidden notes and stepped in the order 4, 7, 2, 3.
  • The test ended after one answer. You picked a wrong option. Start again from question 1.

Rewards

The journey gives 100 XP. Leaving the palace adds a servant's outfit and two solido decorations:

That is the Arrakeen Palace Servant's Tunic, Trousers and Shoes, the Duke Leto Atreides Solido, the Glossu Rabban Solido and the Palatial Servitors Swatch.

What comes next

Noctua's Return follows: look for Noctua in a Hagga Basin settlement. After that, The Great Convention — Part II begins with Call to Arms, which leads into the arena: Art of Kanly and A Deadly Poison. If you want the House politics behind all this, read the Landsraad and Houses guide.
