Where to Find Carbon Ore in Dune Awakening

Carbon Ore is mined in Hagga Basin, mostly in its north-east: around Kel's Splinter, the Wreck of the Tisiphone, Darkwood Depot and Chains of Karak, plus the Eastern Jumble closer to the centre. You need a Cutteray Mk2. Carbon has one job, and it's a big one: with Iron Ingots it makes Steel.

Where to find Carbon Ore in Hagga Basin

Loose chunks you can pick up by hand lie around too. Carbon is spread more evenly than iron or copper, so no single place has a huge field; the best ones sit at 50 to 61 nodes. The good news is that they're bunched together in the north-east, so one loop hits several.

Wreck of the Tisiphone and Darkwood Depot

The heart of the carbon belt. The wreck and the depot are neighbours, together over 110 nodes.

Kel's Splinter and Chains of Karak

Further east along the northern edge. Two outposts with 61 and 52 nodes.

The Cells and Imperial Testing Station No. 63

The eastern end of the cluster. The Cells and the testing station stand side by side, so you can mine between station runs. More in the Imperial Testing Stations guide.

The southern edge of the cluster, with 50 nodes.

Eastern Jumble

The odd one out: north of the map centre rather than in the north-east, with 61 nodes. Handy if your base is in the middle of the basin.

What you need to mine Carbon Ore

• Cutteray Mk2: 10 Iron Ingots and 7 EMF Generators, at a Fabricator, Portable Fabricator or Survival Fabricator.
• The iron for it: where to find Iron Ore.
• Combat gear. Most of the best carbon spots are enemy outposts.

What Carbon Ore is used for

Carbon Ore goes into exactly one recipe, Steel Ingot:

On a small refinery, one Steel Ingot therefore costs 5 Iron Ore and 4 Carbon Ore.

Steel is the gate to the mid-game. It goes into more than a hundred recipes and buildings:

• Medium Ore Refinery (125 steel), which cuts both iron and carbon costs;
• Windtrap (90), the four basic fabricators, including the Survival Fabricator (40 each), Fremen Deathstill (60), Medium Water Cistern (60), Omnidirectional Wind Turbine (45);
• Cutteray Mk3 (15), which you need for Aluminum Ore;
• sandbike Mk3 parts, the scrap buggy, Kel's stillsuit set, Welding Torch Mk3.

Farming tips

• Run the north-eastern loop: Tisiphone, Darkwood Depot, Kel's Splinter, Chains of Karak, The Cells. Five stops, about 280 nodes.
• Pick up loose carbon chunks on the way; they're common and need no tool.
• Saving up for the Medium Ore Refinery? Its 125 steel costs 500 Carbon Ore and 625 Iron Ore on a Small Ore Refinery, plus about 9 litres of water. Fill the cistern before you queue it.
• Keep a stock of Iron Ingots at home. Carbon is useless on its own, and a refinery queue stalls the moment iron runs out.
