In Dune Awakening you refine metals at Ore Refineries. Steel is 1 Iron Ingot plus Carbon Ore at any Ore Refinery; Duraluminum is 1 Aluminum Ingot plus Jasmium Crystals at a Medium or Large Ore Refinery; Plastanium is Titanium Ore plus 1 Stravidium Fiber, which you make from Stravidium Mass at a Medium Chemical Refinery.

1Medium Chemical RefineryTier 1 · DatabaseThe Small Ore Refinery can't touch aluminum, so your first big build at the steel tier is the Medium Ore Refinery. The Large one is a guild-scale project: it costs 300 Plastanium Ingots, so it pays off only when you refine a lot.
How to make Steel
Steel takes two steps: iron ore to iron ingots, then iron ingots plus carbon to steel.

So one Steel Ingot costs 5 Iron Ore + 4 Carbon Ore at a small refinery, or 4 + 3 at a medium one, and 75 ml of water either way. Carbon needs a Cutteray Mk2. The best carbon area in Hagga Basin is the Eastern Jumble, with 61 carbon nodes nearby:

What steel unlocks: the Vehicles Fabricator (40), Survival Fabricator (40), Windtrap (90), Medium Ore Refinery (125), Fremen Deathstill (60), the Buggy (150 for a Mk3 set) and Steel Welding Wire. Keep a stack of steel at home: almost every mid-game build asks for it, and running out stalls everything.
How to make Aluminum and Duraluminum
Aluminum needs at least a Medium Ore Refinery:

One Duraluminum Ingot at a medium refinery is 7 Aluminum Ore + 4 Jasmium Crystals and 550 ml of water. That water cost adds up fast, so build your water farm before you mass-produce it.
Aluminum Ore takes a Cutteray Mk3 (where to find aluminum ore). Jasmium takes a Cutteray Mk4 and is rare in Hagga Basin: about 100 nodes, clustered in caves like Greed, Lust and Limbo:

What aluminum and duraluminum unlock: aluminum builds the Scout Ornithopter (217 ingots for Mk4) and every Mk4 tool. Duraluminum goes into the Medium Chemical Refinery (150), Large Windtrap (180), Advanced Fremen Deathstill (180), Large Water Cistern (115), Cutteray Mk5 (30) and all Mk5 vehicle parts. Aluminum is slow to refine (30 s per ingot at a medium refinery, so 100 ingots take 50 minutes): load the refinery before you head out to mine jasmium.
How to make Stravidium Fiber and Plastanium
Plastanium is the top metal, and both of its inputs come only from the Deep Desert:

One Plastanium Ingot at a medium refinery is 6 Titanium Ore + 3 Stravidium Mass and 1,350 ml of water. Both ores need a Cutteray Mk5 and spawn on Deep Desert rock that moves every week, so use the live finder:

What plastanium unlocks: every Mk6 vehicle part and tool, the four advanced fabricators (115 each), the Large Ore Refinery (300) and the Large Spice Refinery (750). No material is needed in more endgame recipes, so refine every titanium and stravidium run right away instead of letting ore pile up.
Deep Desert safety: most of the Deep Desert is open PvP and full of worms. Mine with a partner if you can, keep your ornithopter close, and fly the ore home before your inventory gets heavy, so one ambush doesn't cost you the whole run.

Silicone and Cobalt Paste aren't alloys, but almost every steel-tier and higher recipe asks for them: where to find flour sand and where to find erythrite.
Refining tips
- Upgrade refineries early. The Medium Ore Refinery cuts iron from 5 to 4 ore per ingot and carbon from 4 to 3 per steel. On hundreds of ingots that's a lot of mining saved.
- Water is the real cost of alloys. 1,000 Duraluminum Ingots cost 550 litres of water. Plan windtraps or a deathstill alongside the refinery.
- Power. A Medium Chemical Refinery and a Large Ore Refinery each draw 350, as much as several fuel generators make. Budget it before you build.
- Let the calculator do the math. The crafting calculator breaks any item down to raw ore, water and time, and you can sell surplus ingots on the market.
How do you make steel in Dune Awakening?
Refine Iron Ore into Iron Ingots, then combine 1 Iron Ingot with Carbon Ore at any Ore Refinery: 4 carbon at a small refinery, 3 at a medium one, 2 at a large one. Each Steel Ingot costs 50 ml of water.
How do you make duraluminum?
Combine 1 Aluminum Ingot with 4 Jasmium Crystals at a Medium Ore Refinery (3 at a Large one). It costs 400 ml of water per ingot.
How do you make plastanium?
Refine 3 Stravidium Mass into 1 Stravidium Fiber at a Medium Chemical Refinery, then combine it with 6 Titanium Ore at a Medium Ore Refinery (4 at a Large one). Each ingot costs 1,250 ml of water.
Can the Small Ore Refinery make aluminum?
No. Aluminum, duraluminum and plastanium need a Medium or Large Ore Refinery.
Where do titanium and stravidium come from?
Only from the Deep Desert. You need a Cutteray Mk5 and an ornithopter to get there.
